Village On The Hill

from £95.00

Village On The Hill, Watercolour 1977 (Limited Edition).

This illustration was the beginning of Elsewhere. Village on the Hill was painted over a period of three months and was part of the four works I completed between 1977~1979.

I drew the Map of Elsewhere, then began to picture it~sketches quickly developed. Concepts began to materialise about the world I had drawn as the map. This picture depicts the battle between the Light and the Dark: clouds have manifested into warriors, There's a sense that the war is in a state of tipping into something beyond the confines of the illustration. The central "Hill" has become what is now named as the Palace of the Immortals: Marratharrith of the White Clouds. Also here lies the conflict between Immortality and mortality. That the mountain depicts eternal life reaching to the heavens... and every where else is the land of mortals.
